Sophie Jaillet is an artist and a rock collector from Montreal, Québec, and the Joggins Fossil Institute’s first ArtScape Artist-in-Residence.

Through observation, scientific method, fieldwork, and sculptural experiments, Sophie explores the fleeting nature of human life within a backdrop of geological awareness.

She holds a BFA from Concordia University (2013) and an MFA from NSCAD University (2016). She has had group and solo exhibits at the Anna Leonowens Gallery and Argyle Fine Art in Halifax; ArtMur and YellowfishArt in Montreal.

Her project, STILL, was selected by jury from 18 submissions from across Canada and from Ireland, New York, and Serbia.

On Monday, July 31, 2017, Sophie started her production of 1 drawing per day for the 6 weeks of her residency. Sophie sits in the same location each day at low tide to create a drawing of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs.

Below is her exact location. Come and visit Sophie and watch her work. You can even bring your own art supplies and join the fun!!

Welcome to Joggins, Sophie — hope you enjoy your summer!
