The Joggins Fossil Institute’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Jade Atkins, Ph.D., has joined the dynamic management team at the Joggins Fossil Centre as its new Director/Curator.

Jade grew up in Pictou, Nova Scotia, and first found her love of evolution, fossils, and palaeontology while at Dalhousie University. Jade has just finished her Ph.D. at Carleton University, where she studied the evolution and development of frogs and salamanders. Jade also holds a M.Sc. in Applied Sciences from Saint Mary’s University and a B.Sc. Honours in Biology and Social Anthropology from Dalhousie University.

At Joggins, Jade hopes to continue to study the evolution and development of amphibians, as well as broaden her research horizons in new directions. When not conducting research, Jade loves outreach and can often be found at community events and in classrooms. Outside of work, Jade loves rock climbing, hiking, camping, creating art, and spending time with her dog, Dawson.

Jade is particularly excited to return home to her beloved Atlantic Ocean after several years away and cannot wait to spend her days working and living by the beautiful Bay of Fundy. She is also looking forward to getting to know everyone in the communities surrounding Joggins.
