Position description
- Position: Café Assistant

- Location: Joggins Fossil Centre – Roundhouse Cafe
- Position start date: June 28, 2025
- Position end date: August 27, 2025
- Hours per week: 37.5 hours
- Hourly rate of pay: $17.00 + 4% Vacation Pay
- Days off: Thursday/Friday
Job purpose
The Café Assistant is responsible for support the operation of the Roundhouse Café following established policies and procedures regarding purchasing, menu development and sustainability, as well as Health & Safety and Food Hygiene requirements.
Job activities
- Responsible for assistant the preparation of basic menu items of baked goods and hot and cold beverages.
- Use of cash register, taking customer meal orders.
- Assist in ensuring that the Roundhouse Café remains a sustainable facet of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs site and increasing revenue wherever possible.
- Assisting the preparation and delivery of catering for small and large groups, relaxed and formal dining, buffets and sit-down meals. Work with the Director of Operations to ensure catering requirements can be met (dietary restrictions etc).
- Ensuring waste and compost are properly sorted as dictated by the Municipality of the County of Cumberland Waste Management.
- Ensuring that a very high standard of service is provided at all times.
- Remain aware of special dietary requirements and ensure that these can be accommodated at all times.
- Maintaining the daily opening times as per JFI Roundhouse Café policy.
- Ensuring that all relevant expenditures are accounted for and receipts are collected.
- Ensuring that the Café areas inside and out, are clean, safe and hygienic at all times; and that adequate security measures are taken.
- To carry out other duties, as required by the Director of Operations.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge and experience of working in a fast paced environment.
- Knowledge of the diversity of dietary requirements, i.e. vegetarian, celiac and lactose intolerance and how to cater to those.
- Be an efficient and work well under pressure.
- Be flexible and willing to meet the catering requests of groups.
- Completion of Criminal Record Search and Child Abuse Registry.
- Valid minimum Emergency First Aid/CPR Certification and WHMIS
- Valid safe food handling certification
- Valid Driver’s license
Preferred knowledge, abilities and skills
- Ability to work efficiently alone with limited supervision as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to remain composed during high-pressure situations while prioritising and remaining professional at all times.
