Sounding Cliffs: Composition, process and context — Jeff Martin presents Sounding Cliffs, Saturday October 5, 2019

Joggins, Nova Scotia — Composer Jeff Martin will present Sounding Cliffs: Composition, process and context on Saturday October 5, at 2:00 pm, at the Joggins Fossil Centre.

Dr. Martin is completing his recent tenure as the Joggins Fossil Institute’s 2019 ArtScape Artist-in-Residence and in this event he will present work completed during his residency, as well as discuss the sound sources, compositional process and future plans for the project.

The Joggins Fossil Institute’s ArtScape Artist-in-residence programme provides visual artists, literary artists and performing artists with the time, financial support, and space to enable them to better focus on their work.

The Sounding Cliffs project follows the tradition of soundscape composition, which is a practice of electroacoustic music that attempts to draw the listener’s attention to the sounds and contexts of specific acoustic environments, in this case, the Joggins Fossil Cliffs and surrounding area. Dr. Martin recorded the sounds of water, falling rocks and other natural and human-made sources to use and manipulate in the composition of his work.

Sounding Cliffs: Composition, process and context is a free event and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The 2019 ArtScape Artist-in-Residence program is sponsored by ArtsNS, ArtsNB and the Municipality of the County of Cumberland.
